6 Volt to 12 Volt Conversion Help

Questions We are asked pretty frequently about how to convert a tractor from 6 volt to 12 volt.  There are any number of reasons why customers want to do the conversion and a debate always arises over whether you should convert or not.  Whether you choose to stick with the original charging system and repair or replace your components or you choose to convert to a newer style charging system, Steiner Tractor Parts can supply many of the parts necessary for the job.

Inexperienced mechanics and tractor hobbyists sometimes have issues with the conversion. If this is your first time converting from 6 volt to 12 volt, you may want to seek out a qualified mechanic or a tractor enthusiast with more experience.  These components can be pricey and incorrect wiring or procedure can ruin some of the electrical parts, increasing the costs for the job.

We have a few helpful documents on our website to assist with your conversion.

Farmall H, Super H, 300, 350 – Here are  IHS1246 instructions for converting these tractors using our alternator bracket kit, IHS1246.  These instructions also provide a useful framework for the steps to take to convert  many different models with slight variations.

 

Many models can use our 63 Amp One Wire Alternator with Pulley for ABC418 converting from 6 volt to 12 volt. Our part number on this alternator is ABC418. We provide some useful installation instructions for this alternator as well as some tips about mounting the alternator.

You may also find it useful when considering converting from 6 volt to 12 volt, to read our document about switching the polarity on your tractor from positive to negative ground.

How do I install my new part?

How can I tell which hydraulic pump I have on my Ford tractor?

For Ford tractors 1953 thru 1964 you could have a vane or piston style pump. The Vane pump housing is a more square style while the piston style is a round housing. For more information view Ford hydraulic pump differences.

What series D17 do I have?

We sometimes get calls from customers trying to figure out which series their Allis Chalmers D17 is. Here is a breakdown that may help.

  • Series I = prior to SN 32001
  • Series II = SN 32001 to 42000
  • Series III = SN 42001 to 75000
  • Series IV = SN 75001 & up

John Deere Lettered Series Gauge Colors

 

Lettered Series Gauge Colors – All were white face gauges until sometime in 1952 when the supply of white face gauges ran out and John Deere switched to black face gauges. Below are the approximate serial number breaks:

  • Styled A changed to black after serial number 700200
  • Styled B changed to black after serial number 306600
  • Styled G changed to black after serial number 60700

Keep in mind these are the serial numbers of when the change was scheduled for, but white face gauges
were installed until the stock was diminished. Tractors with serial numbers not listed probably changed mid 1952 to black face gauges.

How can I tell which starter I need for my Ferguson tractor?

(Applies to Ferguson TE20, TEA20 w/ 80 mm engine and TO20.)

When the flywheel ring gear is toward the engine block your tractor was ‘Lucas’ equipped. Use part MFS069 or MFS069-12V.

When the flywheel ring gear is toward the transmission your tractor was ‘Delco’ equipped. Use MFS135

NOTE: TEA20 (SN: 200001 & up) with 85 mm engines used a starter with a ‘exposed’ drive Bendix only available by special order.

How to determine 9N from 2N Ford tractor.

1939 only 9N

  1. Cast aluminum grill with horizontal slots.
  2. No freeze out plugs on block.
  3. 2-ribs on fender.
  4. Approximately first 700 tractors equipped with cast aluminum hoods.
  5. Ignition key switch on right side of dash.
  6. 2-brush generator.

1940 9N

  1. Single rib fenders.
  2. Freeze out plugs are now inside of block.
  3. Single rib fenders.
  4. Ignition key switch is now on left side of dash.
  5. 3-brush generator.
  6. Hinged battery lid introduced to replace the clip held lid (mid year).

1941 9N

  1. 3 spoke steering wheel (covered spokes) first used.
  2. Steel grill with vertical spokes.
  3. Riveted rear axle hubs replace the 'smooth' rear axle.
  4. Ignition key switch is moved to steering column.

1942 9N

    The 9N parts were being used up to build the 2N.

1942 2N

  1. 3-spoke steering wheel (w/ exposed metal spokes) first used.
  2. Grill now has slotted center bar.
  3. Hood side panels have exposed bolt to retain to front axle support (mid year).
  4. Front emblem has '2N' on lower edge of emblem.
  5. Fender mount holes in rear axle housing are no longer solid, the are opened up between upper and lower vertical hole.

1943 2N

  1. Pressurized radiator is introduced (mid year).
  2. 32" tires are no longer offered.

1944 2N

  1. Trans input shaft gear is changed to helical cut (mid year).
  2. Oval style radius rods replace the solid 'I' beam style rods (mid year).
  3. Sealed beam headlights first offered.

1945 2N

  1. Heavier rear axle housings introduced (mid year).

1946 2N

  1. Rear axle housings are improved by making them thicker again.

1947 2N

  1. Casting number and date added to engine block (where starter bolts) to rear axle housing.
