1942 Farmall H with Stars
In 1942, Mr. Hoover of Troutman, North Carolina wanted a new tractor that had rubber tires on it, so he purchased the 1942 Farmall H. The Farmall was used actively on the Hoover farm from 1942 until 1980. Then the tractor was placed in the barn where it remained for 20 years.
Alan Johnson of Troutman, North Carolina purchased the Farmall in 2000 from the Hoover family and began the restoration process. When Alan sanded the paint he noticed 2 white stars on the hood of the tractor. He went to the Hoover family and ask what the stars were for. Mr. Hoover had two sons that were serving in the military during WWII, during this time families would put stars in their windows to show they had family members in the military. As Mr. Hoover drove his new tractor home he stopped and had a white star painted on each side of the hood, in honor of his sons.
Today, the Farmall is still in great condition and resides at the Johnson Farm in Troutman, North Carolina. Mainly used as a show piece in town parades and family pictures!

It was machines like this and the farmers that used them that fed the world during WW11.
They were just as important as the airplane and tank.
I have been given a 1955 International 300 Utility from my son. The tractor had been sitting for the last two years unused as it is in need of some care and attention. It means a little more to me as it was born in the same year as I was, and I had always wanted a compact tractor. Having just built a garage I now have a warm place to work on it, and it provides a project to do during this pandemic. Do you folks at Steiner service the Canadian market?
Great restoration, I would like to see more as is condition Farmalls that are working still with the stories of there everyday work , JG
So, did Mr. Troutman restore the white stars to continue honoring those that serve?
Really enjoyed the background info regarding the Hoover Farmall H? What happened to
the two stars?
For Tony Lute – Yes Steiner does handle orders from Canada. I’ve ordered several items
for my ’56 Mod 434 (gas) Also staff is very helpful.
I would have to paint the stars back on ,just because that’s the way it was,and the thought behind it!
Nice choice!
I was with my Dad when he bought the 1955 Allis Chalmers CA which was built in November from the AC Dealer in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. My Dad took my brother and me to the AC Dealer and he bought the CA on May 10/1956 with a 2 row corn cultivator. I still have the Allis Chalmers CA which we still use to rototil the garden and run some smaller grain augers. I and my brother learned to drive the CA and also my son and daughters and grandsons learned.
I always enjoy seeing any photos of 1940’s IH Farmalls. In 1940 my Dad was 17 years old and had started farming with his Dad. He had saved his money from the time he was a child and had enough to purchase a new Farmall M. He still owned the tractor when he died in 2017. After owing it for 77 years he passed it on to me. I am in the process of restoring it hopefully to excellent condition. I will document the progress with many photos.
