My tractor is sputtering fuel or electrical problem?

06/27/2008 by ST Leave a Comment

If your tractor is missing or sputtering and you want to find out if it is a fuel problem or electircal, simply pull the choke out, if it trys to run better it is fuel if it doesn’t help it is electrical.

Do you have this part?

06/27/2008 by ST

Every day we receive emails asking if we have certain parts, we have decided to list these inquiries anonymously with hopes that they will help someone else.  Some parts we have some we do not, and if we can tell you where to find them we will list that too. Good luck with your restoration.

For shipping are your crankshafts packed in a wooden crate, are they forged or cast steel, new or rebuilt? They are packed in a wood crate, cast steel and new.

We are looking for a set of front wheel weights for a IH 274. Do you think your IHS331 would fit? Only if the bolt pattern matches, our is 8 1/2″ c.c. bolts.

I am restoring a 1939 Farmall A, I have the front grill but need to replace the screen. Do you sell the screen separately? Yes we have the screen IHS208 and the clips MIS100.

I am looking for switches: two John Deere B’s: 1941 & 1947. The 47 doesn’t have the serial number plate on it so the number listed above is in the 47 bracket. Would like the magneto switch and light switches.  Magneto switch is part ABC489 Lite switch is ABC398

Looking for a main adjusting needle for a Marvel Schebler carburetor TSX884 for a Massey 65.  This is a special order and will be $50.00 + shipping

I have a Harry Ferguson tractor serial number TO 139017, it is a continental engine. The raised engine block number is Z129A600, I think that it is a TO30.  It is a TO30 the new starter is MFS135 new regulator is ABC152 no generator available, salvage yards only.

I need to find a new or used sediment bowl for my John Deere H tractor. I dropped and broke the original one. It was  1 3/4 inches high and 2 inches wide which is called a short one. It has straight sides and is not tapered. I think your ABC123 shows as a tapered side bowl. Can you help me out?  Ours are 1.280 tall or 2.370 tall no one makes size you are asking for. Original should have been ABC124 2.370 tall you may have to buy complete sediment bowl to get your tractor going.

This Is Their Story

06/25/2008 by ST 2 Comments

Dealer Nate Girbach came in from Milan, MI pulling a trailer with his 1958 John Deere 320.  Nate has Nate_sarah been a dealer with Steiner Tractor Parts since 2004.  When asked how many tractors he has restored he replied "too many to remember".  Nate has an agricultural background as a 4th generation farmer, Great-grandfather Andrew, Grandfather Ernest and father Gary all farmed before him.  Nate currently works a 50 head dairy farm along with 1500 acres of cash crop.  It seems tractors are a big part of his personal life as well. He met his girlfriend Sarah when she lived on the section North of his family, they both enjoyed tractor pulls and according to Nate "she had a tractor but I had the trailer".  They are pictured here by Nate’s John Deere but he tells us Sarah is an Allis Chalmers girl.

Father and son, Chet and Chad Terry brought in 4 Case tractors; 1961 model Terry_family630, 1966 model 530, 1968 model 430, and a very rare 1964 model 431.  According to Chad they didn’t know the find they had with the ‘431’ they bought it in 2005 with a blown motor and had to rebuild it not knowing that it was a very rare demonstrator model, and a first year diesel sent only for display at dealers.  The family farms 40 acres and attend around eight shows a year within Michigan with their Case tractors.

Geoff Parmenter fell into tractors strictly by necessity.  Geoff purchased a home in North BranchParmenter Michigan on 3.4-acres and armed with only a push mower he decided to buy a tractor for mowing and other work around the property.  Geoff chose a Ford because he said he has always been partial to Fords because to him they scream tractor.  Geoff purchased his 1955 Ford model 860 in 2001 as the 3rd owner.  He restored the tractor with his brother-in-law over the course of 2 years.

R.G. Whitford of Perrington brought his International McCormick to the show and says he has been Whitford_3 restoring tractors for nearly 30 years and is hoping to pass his love of tractors on to his grandsons pictured with him; Trent 2, Blake 1, Brennan 10 months, and Landon 7 months.  Whitford says "I am an International man, I love them".  R.G. has retired from farming and has passed it on to his youngest with hopes it will remain a family tradition.

Dan Sager of Napoleon and Tony Moore from Grass Lake have been friends for 6 years and have beenDan_and_tony restoring tractors most of their lives. Both men are members of the Jackson Area Antique Tractor Club,  and take their tractors to around 6 shows a year. The Farmall B they brought with them has been a work in progress for the last 3 years. Tony will be restoring a John Deere B in remembrance of his Grandpa.

Gene Kurney of Juddville brought his 1957 Farmall 450 to the show.  The 450 Gene_kurneywas bought new by his father in 1958 and will be passed on to his first grandson Wyatt Rosser.  According to Gene the tractor has around 3200 hours and the motor has never been touched.  The only parts replaced have been the tires, seat and steering wheel.  Gene has farmed his whole life and also owns a 1953 Super H that will be passed on to his son Justin.

How do I find out what year my International tractor is?

06/20/2008 by ST 3 Comments

If the serial number tag is missing you can estimate the year by when the castings were made. The bigger castings such as transmission, rearend, clutch housings, rear wheel castings, front support casting, etc will have a raised letter barcode.
Example: 12-31-‘S’ = 1950 year Barcodes started with A = 1931, B = 1932 etc. in alphabetical order to Z = 1954 (The letter V was left out on purpose) 1955 then started with ‘A’ again thru 1958 = D after that many letters were dropped from the system making it difficult to verify the year.

How do I polarize a generator?

06/11/2008 by ST Leave a Comment

Before starting the engine, momentarily touch one end of a piece of wire to regulator terminal marked ‘arm’ or ‘gen’ and the other end to terminal marked ‘bat’. A spark will occur when wire is removed this is natural.  DO NOT TOUCH ‘fld’ terminal, regulator will instantly be ruined!

How do I test a fuel gauge?

06/10/2008 by ST 2 Comments

Simply hook positive test lead to one side and negative test lead to the other, if the gauge needle moves it is good. Sometimes if a fuel gauge isn’t working it can have a bad ground, you can run an extra ground wire from gauge to sending unit.

Practice Good Receiving Habits

06/09/2008 by ST Leave a Comment

Steiner Tractor Parts, Inc. is committed to providing top notch service as well as quality restoration tractor parts, but sometimes we need your help to provide the best, most efficient service.  We know that the average customer does not receive packages regularly and freight shipments rarely if ever. We thought we’d share some best practices when receiving your shipment so if an issue occurs we can handle the problem efficiently.

  1. If possible check package for outside damage before driver leaves. If damaged make sure driver notes the damage.
  2. Check outside  of box for the packing slip, note any back ordered items on the packing slip.
  3. Open package carefully. Do not put knife all the way in the box as you can slice decals, cut seat covers and gouge emblems.
  4. Remove items and check off on the packing slip.
  5. Open items like headlights, lenses and check that they haven’t cracked during transit.
  6. Make sure to check inside of each box for additional items like knobs and boots stuffed into battery boxes.
  7. Look at items that are sold as left and right and make sure you have both sides.
  8. If all is okay, file the packing slip with your other tractor related documents.

If there is any problem, damage, defect or missing or incorrect product shipped contact us right away by phone 1-800-234-3280 or email sales@steinertractor.com  The sooner we deal with any problem, the easier it will be.

LTL Freight Shipments

  1. Someone must be home to accept the shipment.
  2. The driver will present several documents. Do not sign before unloading.
  3. After you unload the shipment, look at what you’ve received. Are there any dents or signs of damage? Is the shrink wrap torn or partially removed? Are the pieces still securely banded?
  4. Now, look at the documents the driver gave you it should say somewhere on the document "Said to contain ____ pieces" or "____ Pieces" "STC _____ pcs".  Make sure you have that number of pieces. The skid / pallet does not count as a piece.
  5. If all is in order and you have all pieces sign the document. If anything is out of the ordinary, damaged, possibly damaged or missing. Show the driver make a note on his document and sign. If possible, get him to sign also.
  6. Now, find the packing slip and proceed as above form step 2.

With your help we will be able to navigate through any issues that may arise with ease and you will be looking forward to another load of top quality restoration parts from Steiner Tractor Parts.

What weight oil should I use in my gas tractor engine?

06/09/2008 by ST Leave a Comment

If it has not been rebuilt recently use a straight 30 weight non-detergent, if it has been rebuilt recently you can use a detergent type oil.

How to Remove a Steering Wheel

06/08/2008 by ST 2 Comments

How to pull a steering wheel off on some tractors with exposed steering wheel spokes.  Take the nut off, soak the center hub (with penetrating oil) where the steering shaft goes thru.  Tap the spoke of the steering wheel and if you are lucky it will start to loosen.  If it doesn’t move you can use a torch (DO NOT — USE if it is close to your gas tank) heat the center hub up and tap the spoke of the steering wheel.  On other applications with covered spoke steering wheels sometimes the center hub is threaded so you can use a steering wheel puller to remove the wheel.  Otherwise you can hit the covered spokes with a hammer to break the outer covering and use a 3-jaw puller to pull the steering wheel.  On tractors that have steering wheels held by a pin thru the hub use a punch to try to drive the pin out, if it won’t move you may have to drill the pin out, then tap the hub of the steering wheel to remove it.

How do I switch from positive to negative ground?

06/07/2008 by ST 3 Comments

Reverse wires on coil, reverse amp gauge wires, reverse battery cables, and if you are still using a generator with regulator you will need to repolarize the regulator. If tractor is equipped with a fuel gauge you will have to reverse the wires on it.

How do I polarize a generator?  Before starting the engine, momentarily touch one end of a piece of wire to regulator terminal marked 'arm' or 'gen' and the other end to terminal marked 'bat'. A spark will occur when wire is removed this is natural. DO NOT TOUCH 'fld' terminal, regulator will instantly be ruined.
