Tractor Story – 1949 Massey Harris Pony

I bought the tractor at an auction near Rochester, NY in the winter of 2011. There were two other Massey-Harris Ponys at the auction along with two Farmall Cubs a couple Doodlebugs, and a few other tractors. I presume the proximity to Canada explained the ratio of Pony’s to Farmall Cubs. My tractor had newer wiring but no battery and the tires were flat, so I didn’t know if it ran but did know the cylinders were not rusted in place.

I got the gas tank sludge cleaned out, acid boiled it, and re-coated it. Got a battery, added gas and got it started soon thereafter. The first photo is of the Pony at the time.

For the restoration (Summer 2011), I took off everything except the engine/heads and the drive train (second photo). Sand blasted the small stuff, rust neutralized the rest. I sprayed it with primer and an automotive version of Massey-Harris red. My next restoration is getting a Woods L59 Belly Mower in working condition and fabricating it onto the Pony.
