Tractor Stories – 1950 John Deere A

John_Deere_A_finished_002
Just thought I would drop a note with a couple pics of my recent restoration of a 1950 John Deere A. This tractor has been in my family since it was new. It was passed down to me about 3 years ago in pretty sad condition. I bought many of the new parts from Steiner and must say that the parts were of top notch quality as was the service and shipping time. I just finished this restoration about 3 weeks ago. This wasn't a simple cleaning and painting. It was completely restored and now operates perfectly.

It turned out so well that a friend who saw it has given me a 1952 model "M" that I now intend on restoring. I will of course be looking to Steiner for many more parts in the very near future.

Thanks,

Tractor Stories – 1950 Case DC

1950 DC Case 006

This 1950 Case DC almost had a life in the scrap yard until I saved it from going. It has been in my family since it was brand new. My great grandfather used it to run a threshing machine and a 4 bottom plow. My friends and family said "Just take it to the scrap yard it isn't worth anything". I said "No, my grandmother drove it, it is going to be running again". Now after Summer and Fall of 2010 it is all done. I would like to thank Steiner's for the brake linings, tool box and the magneto. Next Summer it is going to be used to rake hay.

Tractor Trivia – Finding Serial Number on Massey Harris 33 & 44

Example_2

MH 33 & 44 Tractor Serial Numbers – In addition to the serial number plates frequently missing from the frame rail behind engine, the serial numbers are steel stamped into the frame / top of transmission about where driver's left foot might rest. Frequently these areas are covered with grease, dirt, and/or paint, but serial number will be there. It may be in 2 lines with designation such as 33G1RF above the actual serial number.

Common designations are:
G=Gas (vs K=distillate or D=diesel or B=LP)
1=Sea Level (vs A=altitude or 5=altitude 5000 feet)
R=RowCrop (vs S=standard or W=wide front or O=Orchard)
F=Foot Clutch (vs H=hand clutch)

Not all codes were used on all tractors and designations as W could also be Wheatland on a 555, etc.
