Antique Tractor Decals, Tractor Decal Placement and Other Decal Questions Answered!

04/17/2009 by ST Leave a Comment

Recently we’ve noticed some of our customers using our site wide search to try and find information on where decals go on their tractor.  This can be very challenging as this information wasn’t always well kept. We spoke with our technical expert, Jr. Roberts about where to look for research and information on the placement of tractor decals.  Here is what we were able to find out.

Ford_2000 Ford decals are the easiest to place.  Many of our sets are only Hood decals, and those are very easy to place.  Also, some of our higher end vintage Ford tractor decals even include detailed installation instructions.  These are pretty clearly noted in the catalog on page 150 and 151.  The decals that include instructions are:  DEC232, DEC442, DEC443, DEC445, DEC444, DEC446.

Many other antique tractors are more difficult.  For antique Farmall Tractors, there are several booksBOK059 available that cover the decal placement.  We offer a beautiful coffee table style book for Farmall tractors, titled Farmall Letter Series Tractors by Guy Fay and Andy Kraushaar.  This book includes valuable information on decal placement BOK073 and is touted as an “originality guide”.  There is a similar book available titled Original Farmall Hundred Series 1954-1958 that offers similar information for the hundred series antique Farmall tractors.  In addition to being very informative, both of these books offer excellent tractor pictures in an easy and fun to read format.

For John Deere tractor decals, the best source is probably the Two Cylinder Magazine. According to Jr, they occasionally offer images from the factory detailing tractor decal placement.

For other tractors, if you can see where the decals were on the original paint, you may want to make a note of that before you begin sandblasting. That will help you to place the decals correctly when your antique tractor restoration is finished.

Decal placement for antique tractor restoration is a hotly debated topic.  One of the primary waysMccormick_w4_standard that restorers determine where to put the decals is by looking at tractor pictures and by looking at actual restored tractors at various tractor shows.  Of course, if one person has placed the decals incorrectly, then this system breaks down a little bit.  If you get really lost, try searching the posts at Antique Tractors Forum.  The posters there would be willing to help you try and figure it out and share information about where they put their decals and where they did their decal placement research.

I hope that this helps. If you have any sources of information that we aren’t aware of, please share it in the comments below.  It will be useful to your fellow tractor restoration enthusiasts!

MFS145 Massey Ferguson Tachometer Instructions

03/31/2009 by ST 4 Comments

1. Installation is relatively easy on models equipped with the later production generator armature which is tapped to receive the drive pinion gear. Remove the cover plate at the back of the generator and the screw plug in the end of armature shaft (photo 1 & 2). If the screw plug is difficult to remove an impact driver or a small punch can be used to free it. Screw the pinion gear into the end of the armature (photo 3 & 4). If the end of the armature is not threaded, proceed to step 8.

 Tractormeter_Instructions_1 Tractormeter_Instructions_2   Tractormeter_Instructions_3  Tractormeter_Instructions_4

Tractormeter_Instructions_5 2. The tachometer drive assembly can then be attached to the back of the generator. Make sure the housing and needle bearing are lubricated with grease. The housing contains a driven gear; a gasket and the backing plate cover which is secured with one flathead screw. Tractormeter_Instructions_5 (photo 5) Install the gasket between the back of the generator and the backing plate, carefully align the teeth of the pinion gear with the teeth on the driven gear and attach the assembly to the back of the generator with two flat head 8-32 x ¾" screws (photo 6).

3. Remove the two mounting bolts at the base of the right side of the upper steering gear Tractormeter_Instructions_7 housing and install the flat mounting bracket under the bolts. The two smaller holes should face the seat (photo 7).

4. Install grommets in the two larger holes of the stepped mounting bracket. Place the flanged spacer washers in the grommets, with the flanges on top. Slide the studs on theTractormeter_Instructions_8 Tractormeter through the spacers and secure with flat washers, lock washers and nuts (photo 8). Be careful not to over tighten the nuts.

5. Attach the Tractormeter and stepped bracket assembly to the flat

Tractormeter_Instructions_9 bracket with two ¼" bolts, nuts and washers and secure (photo 9).

6. Attach the drive cable to the Tractormeter and to the drive assembly. Make sure the Tractormeter_Instructions_10 square ends of the cable are fully seated before tightening the locking rings (photo 10). Secure the cable to the air cleaner tube with a tie strap to keep it away from the exhaust manifold. The completed installation should look like photo 11.

Tractormeter_Instructions_11 7. Start the tractor and observe the Tractormeter. If it does not operate, disconnect the cable at the drive end, check to make sure the inner shaft is fully seated in the Tractormeter, spin it by hand and observe if the needle moves. Start the tractor and observe if the output shaft of the gearbox is turning. Turn off the tractor. Carefully insert the square end of the drive cable shaft in the end of the output shaft. When it is fully seated, secure the locking ring. Start the tractor and observe the Tractormeter.

8. If the end of the armature is not threaded, it will have to be removed from the generator and taken to a machine shop to be drilled and tapped to accept the drive gear. A hole, 11/32" in diameter and 7/8" to 1" deep must be drilled in the end of the armature shaft and threaded with a 3/8-32 NEF tap to provide a

useable thread depth of ½" or a total thread depth of approximately "¾". Taps of this thread size are readily available from companies that supply machinist tools and supplies. The thread is finer than that on a 3/8" NF bolt. After the armature is replaced and the generator installed on the tractor, the pinion gear can be screwed into the end of the armature. Optionally, you can replace the generator with a rebuilt model with an armature threaded to accept the tachometer drive gear. These generators are also used on the 6 volt version of the TO-35 and are often designated, "For use with tach drive" in catalog listings. Proceed to step 2.

Why doesn’t Steiner Tractor Parts sell paint for restoration projects?

01/18/2009 by ST 11 Comments

We get asked this several times a day, and we noticed many customers searching for this term using our new and improved tractor parts search feature.  I thought that this would be a good time to thoroughly answer this question.

The primary reason we do not sell paint is due to storage and shipping concerns.  We have a very large warehouse and it is not heated beyond 52 degrees.  This is a perfect temperature for working in, but not for storing paint.  Also, it takes special licensing to store and ship paint as it is considered a hazardous material.  We do not want to dedicate any staff person to dealing with Haz-Mat licenses and protocol when that person could be helping our customers locate new parts for their antique tractor.

The other major reason that we do not sell tractor paint is because of differences in opinion regarding paint codes.  It is very difficult to find excellent, definitive information on this hotly debated topic in tractor restoration discussions.  We previously published paint codes in our catalog, but removed them when we had complaints.  If we receive enough requests via our comments on this page, we can repost them for reference only, not as a definitive answer to the questions about paint codes to use.

While we will not be adding paint to our product line any time soon, we can make some recommendations of places to purchase paint.  First of all, we recommend purchasing paint locally.  Your purchase can boost your local economy while saving you the expense of shipping a hazardous material.  As far as local sources, you could try any place that Dupont Brand paint is available, they make a quality paint that can be used on vintage tractors.  I would start my search for paint at a local dealer for my particular brand.  They oftentimes have access to paint codes and have the colors you will need right on hand.  For vintage tractors, John Deere dealers, AGCO dealers (Allis, Cockshutt, Minneapolis Moline, Massey Harris, Massey Ferguson, and Oliver), and CNH dealers (Case, International/Farmall, Ford) are still excellent resources for information and tractor related merchandise.  Other great sources for tractor paint include Sherwin Williams, NAPA stores and other places where automotive paint is sold.  PPG produces a superior quality automotive paint according to Dan Steiner.

Thanks for your interest in Steiner Tractor Parts.  I hope you found this paint resource article informative and helpful.  If you have comments to add on your experience with paint purchases, please leave them below.

  • How to determine width / backspacing on a rim

07/31/2008 by ST Leave a Comment

To determine backspacing, lay the rim flat on the ground with the back of the wheel facing up. Next, lay a straightedge across rim and measure the distance from the back side of mounting surface to the straightedge.

To determine width of rim measure on the inside (bead to bead) not outside to outside.
