3rd Generation Allis Chalmers WD, and FFA
|
My tractor is a 1950 Allis Chalmers WD and it has been in my family for 3 generations now. My late grandfather “Papaw Bob” purchased this tractor back in the 1970’s from its original owner. It was used around the farm to cultivate, blade dirt and gravel, plow and to move things around the farm. After years of using the old WD, my Papaw Bob gifted the family tractor to my dad Brett.
My dad repainted the WD as a class FFA project. My dad’s AG teacher, Mr. Holbrook, had a positive influence on my dad’s life and helped him find his start in the grain industry. The WD was the first tractor that my dad used to work ground with and to plant his corn and soybeans.
Years later, it was my turn to continue the family legacy of joining FFA, my Dad passed the tractor on to me. At this point in time, the tractor was not the prettiest and had started to have some leaks and cosmetic issues. I decided that for my FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience, I would show market goats and market hogs; I used the money from my fair projects to buy new parts (mainly from Steiner) and restore her to her former glory.

After four years in FFA, I managed to save enough money for new paint, new front and back wheels, new fenders (originals were in terrible condition), a new hood, decals, new gaskets, filters, steering wheel and battery box. I also applied to the Titan Tire program and earned a new pair of shoes for the front and back.
4 years of college and 2 B.S. degrees later, I am now an FFA Advisor myself and I teach grades 6-12, including my favorite class, AG mechanics. My goal is to restore a tractor with my students so that they can experience the joy of restoring these old machines. Tractors have always been a part of my life. I am looking forward to taking the family tractor to many upcoming shows!
