This 1967 John Deere 2510 Synchro range Diesel was purchased new by my maternal grandfather. He was a dairy farmer, and this tractor was used daily on the farm, whether to rake hay or move bales around.
He passed away in January 2012 at the age of 80, at which time it went to my mother. The tractor sat for about nine years, six at a family friend’s house and six at my parents. Two years ago, my mom asked if I wanted it, which I had for quite some time. Two batteries and a full charge later, I had it on a trailer and headed to my place 20 miles away. I use it regularly and repair things one piece at a time as finances allow.
Unfortunately, it spent some time at my neighbor’s place, who said he would fix some things because I had been letting him use it. Still, seven months later, I got it back in worse shape than it had left (I drove it there, and we dragged it back, to name one thing).
The Good thing is, I got it running again, and we are slowly but surely making progress! The most remarkable thing was sitting on the fender I rode on years before getting horribly sunburned as my grandfather put up hay, watching my son sit up in the seat, “driving” (steering) the tractor down the lane on our property, making him the fourth generation to drive it. My brother also drove it for the first time this year. This tractor will continue to serve our family for many years to come.
