Tractor Stories – 1950 Case DC

02/24/2011 by ST Leave a Comment

1950 DC Case 006

This 1950 Case DC almost had a life in the scrap yard until I saved it from going. It has been in my family since it was brand new. My great grandfather used it to run a threshing machine and a 4 bottom plow. My friends and family said "Just take it to the scrap yard it isn't worth anything". I said "No, my grandmother drove it, it is going to be running again". Now after Summer and Fall of 2010 it is all done. I would like to thank Steiner's for the brake linings, tool box and the magneto. Next Summer it is going to be used to rake hay.

John Deere Lettered Series Gauge Colors

02/08/2011 by ST 2 Comments

Lettered Series Gauge Colors – All were white face gauges until sometime in 1952 when the supply of white face gauges ran out and John Deere switched to black face gauges. Below are the approximate serial number breaks:

  • Styled A changed to black after serial number 700200
  • Styled B changed to black after serial number 306600
  • Styled G changed to black after serial number 60700

Keep in mind these are the serial numbers of when the change was scheduled for, but white face gauges
were installed until the stock was diminished. Tractors with serial numbers not listed probably changed mid 1952 to black face gauges.

Tractor Trivia – Finding Serial Number on Massey Harris 33 & 44

02/04/2011 by ST 1 Comment

Example_2

MH 33 & 44 Tractor Serial Numbers – In addition to the serial number plates frequently missing from the frame rail behind engine, the serial numbers are steel stamped into the frame / top of transmission about where driver's left foot might rest. Frequently these areas are covered with grease, dirt, and/or paint, but serial number will be there. It may be in 2 lines with designation such as 33G1RF above the actual serial number.

Common designations are:
G=Gas (vs K=distillate or D=diesel or B=LP)
1=Sea Level (vs A=altitude or 5=altitude 5000 feet)
R=RowCrop (vs S=standard or W=wide front or O=Orchard)
F=Foot Clutch (vs H=hand clutch)

Not all codes were used on all tractors and designations as W could also be Wheatland on a 555, etc.

  IMG_0021 John Jasper shared some pictures with us of the Knights of Columbus Journey for Charity Tractor Cruise on September 12th 2010. The cruise donates 100% of the funds raised to the Franklin County food banks. Last year they raised over $13,000. This year 76 tractors drove the 30 miles from St Clair to Washington Missouri. Last years cruise can be viewed on You Tube.

Congratulations everyone on another safe and succesful cruise!

Tractor Stories – 1950 Cockshutt 40

08/25/2010 by ST Leave a Comment

For the Cockshutt section of the 2011 Steiner Tractor Parts catalog contest 19 year old Molly Bradley of Minneapolis Minnesota won with “The Mix” and “Field of Dreams”.
We asked Molly what advice she would give to others and she replied with the following.

Advice I would give to others is-

1. It doesnt matter what other people think of you. (living half mile from downtown Minneapolis with tractors…I get funny looks)

2. Start with one tractor and finish that project before starting more.

3. Pulling is scary when you first start!!!! but when the front end goes up a couple times you start to get used to it and you get to trust yourself to drive correctly and your tractor more!

4. If you need help or something doesnt seem right…ask someone who knows!

5. The people you meet at tractor shows and tractor pulls are some of the nicest most friendly people in this country.

And advice I would give to the older generation that loves tractors…..Get the grandchildren involved!!! It just might be our passion too. Even if we are girls! and tell us your story of farm life.

Thanks!

Molly

Tractor Stories – 1952 John Deere MT

08/18/2010 by ST Leave a Comment

Bought new in April of 1952 with cultivators and single moldboard plow from H.R. Gutshall & Sons, Carlisle PA., at a cost of $1650.00 by my father, Lyman Nester, of Dillsburg PA. York County. The sales agreement was, 27 head of dad’s hogs at $600.00, leaving a balance of $1050.00 to be financed.
This was an excellent addition to our farming experience since at the time we had one other John Deere, a 1948 “B”. This tractor was used primarily for some plowing, disking, and drag harrowing, all planting (corn and small grain), mowing hay and pastures, raking hay, corn stalk shredding, cultivating corn, pulling wagons and field sprayer, and bringing in the cows. One distinct memory I have of this tractor is when I was pulling a 3 section harrow, the tractor front came up and rotated 180 degrees front to back while I was on it. I found myself pinned under it with the engine running. This occurred in the spring of 1958. Dad was also harrowing with the “B” and saw the tractor on its top with me under it. As I remember, it ran for a short time upside down and then gurgled and quit and the muffler began to burn. Dad tried to knock the fire out with his cap……

2011 Catalog Cover Winner!

Grand Prize “Catalog Cover” Winner
Neal Hazelton

1951 Farmall
“Timeless International”
(This old barn and I)

“This 1951 Farmall “M” is a special part of who I am. As a kid I remember my cousins and I climbing our way to the top of “Grandpas tractor” and shifting gears while we pretended to harvest corn. Years later all the belongings on the farm in Neola, IA were being auctioned off. To my relief I was able to attend the auction and become the proud new owner of this sentimental piece of farming history. Currently the “M” is in the process of restoration. With the help of Steiner Tractor Parts I hope to one day show Grandpa his old tractor completely restored. It’s Just as Grandpa said, “She’s a Honey.”
-I would like to dedicate this photograph to my Grandmother, Sheila Ring. “You will always be an inspiration to me, as you have been before.”

Thank you Neal for your story, and thanks to everyone for all the great photos.

1953 John Deere 50

06/18/2010 by ST Leave a Comment

Hello! My name is Gayle Eaton. I am a retired public educator who has farm roots, and in 2006 I purchased a 1953 John Deere model 50 for $1,500 because it reminded me of one my Dad had owned years before when he farmed in southern Idaho. This nostalgic purchase led to a ten-month long process and an investment of over $6,000, but it was all worth the effort because I now own a cherished and preserved piece of rural Americana.

For the rest of Gayle’s story or to submit your story go to Tractor Stories.

Do you have one of these?
