Case SC vs the big tree
|
It was a black and stormy night. The wind blew the heavy rain in all directions. The old dead tree had finally submitted to the powerful force of the wind and toppled over, blocking both lanes of the country road. The local fire department had responded to the situation, but their small chain saw was useless against the massive trunk. The road needed to be made passable again as soon as possible, but what to do?
Then out of the driving rain two glowing orbs appeared accompanied by a chugging sound. Arriving on the scene was a 1948 Case SC with me at the wheel. I had seen the emergency flashers through the trees behind the house, and went out to investigate. Observing the dilemma I thought I might be able to help. I fired up the old Case, and we chugged out to the scene. The firemen stepped back as I attached a heavy tow strap to the heavy trunk.
The old Case strained on the taunt strap, and with a grunt started to move that dead tree. We dragged that load down the road for several hundred yards until the entire trunk and branches were completely clear or the roadway. The firemen cleaned up broken branches left on the asphalt, and the road was once again usable. I and the old Case departed with a wave to the firemen, and headed back to the dry barn. The tractor showed it could still do the job after more than 70 years.
