Tractor Stories – 1952 John Deere MT

08/18/2010 by ST Leave a Comment

Bought new in April of 1952 with cultivators and single moldboard plow from H.R. Gutshall & Sons, Carlisle PA., at a cost of $1650.00 by my father, Lyman Nester, of Dillsburg PA. York County. The sales agreement was, 27 head of dad’s hogs at $600.00, leaving a balance of $1050.00 to be financed.
This was an excellent addition to our farming experience since at the time we had one other John Deere, a 1948 “B”. This tractor was used primarily for some plowing, disking, and drag harrowing, all planting (corn and small grain), mowing hay and pastures, raking hay, corn stalk shredding, cultivating corn, pulling wagons and field sprayer, and bringing in the cows. One distinct memory I have of this tractor is when I was pulling a 3 section harrow, the tractor front came up and rotated 180 degrees front to back while I was on it. I found myself pinned under it with the engine running. This occurred in the spring of 1958. Dad was also harrowing with the “B” and saw the tractor on its top with me under it. As I remember, it ran for a short time upside down and then gurgled and quit and the muffler began to burn. Dad tried to knock the fire out with his cap……
