Tractor Story – 1967 John Deere 3020

1967 John Deere 3020
1967 John Deere 3020

This is our 1967 John Deere 3020. It is a somewhat unique tractor in that it has a gasoline powered engine instead of diesel. Over the years we have restored this tractor in between baling seasons and it has never let us down with it’s durability. This particular tractor is currently For Sale as well.

Received two first places.  Just for fun ran against some super tractors in division 3 and still managed to get two third places.  Its not how fast you run its how far. Had a great day.

Tractor Story – 1922 Farmall F20

05/01/2013 by ST Leave a Comment

tractorI own a 1922 Farmall F20 which has many parts on it that were ordered from Steiner over the years. It was a Christmas gift to my grandfather in 1995, we gave him the crank wrapped up in Christmas paper. Ever since, the tractor has become more and more dilapidated and every time you go to use it, something else either breaks or stops working. So finally I chose to spend some time and money to fix a piece of AMERICAN history and get it running again. It started with an oil filter, magneto, carburetor, spark plug wires, spark plugs, muffler, tires, and rims. Up to that point things seemed to be coming together quite nicely when all of a sudden, things fall apart, literally!! As I was taking it up the road to the steam show. It occurred to me that the engine started to drag and not run quite right. The next thing I see is a line of about 50 cars behind me while I have a seized engine on a tractor in the middle of the road. Luckily, I was being followed by my grandfather in his pickup truck who towed me back to the shop. “Back to the old drawing board”, he said. After spending hours replacing the sleeves and pistons, that tractor ran great and to this day remains my favorite tractor on the farm. God Bless America and God Bless Farmers!!

Tractor Story – Ford 841

03/27/2013 by ST Leave a Comment

Here’s a picture of a Steiner Restoration Tractor.  Just about everything on this tractor except for the paint and my sweat is from Steiner.  I can’t locate a before picture, but this tractor was a complete wreck.

Tractor Story – John Deere 3020

03/16/2013 by ST Leave a Comment

This is our 1967 John Deere 3020 that has been completely restored over the years. It has been used for driving fence posts, with a rear-mounted hydraulic driver, but  primarily we used it for raking and pulling a baler. The unique thing about this tractor is that it is one of the few gas engines that John Deere ever put in a 3020 or any of this series of John Deere tractors. We are looking to sell this particular tractor if anyone is interested.

Congratulations Tim Lindsey

03/01/2013 by ST Leave a Comment

Tim was the winner of a Steiner Tractor Parts hoodie after entering his name in our drawing at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville Kentucky.  Tim has two tractors that he has restored, a Ford 4600 (pictured) and a John Deere 3020, and is looking for his next project. Congratulations Tim, and we look forward to seeing pictures from your next project.

This is our Ford 3600 that I bought off of a family friend in 2007. He bought it in 1977 new and used it as a farm tractor but also as his mode for transportation into town occasionally. I bought it after it had been sitting in a barn for several years and we went through it pretty thoroughly topping it off with a nice paint job. The tractor only has 3600 hours and it will turn over on the first crank and run like it did off the showroom floor. We use it for snow removal, mowing and some hay work occasionally.

Tractor Story – 1950 Oliver 66

02/26/2013 by ST 5 Comments

I purchased this 1950 Oliver 66 from a salvage yard in western Nebraska through ebay. Through several emails I felt I may have a diamond in the rough. The tractor was delivered and the points, plugs, etc. were replaced. The carburetor and starter were rebuilt, several oil seals were replaced, and then miscellaneous parts were installed. A valve job was performed and the engine appeared to be in excellent shape. Since there was no lifting mechanism on the tractor I found a power lift on ebay and during installation of it I was able to check the transmission for wear and found very little…”A Diamond in the Rough!”. With the help of Steiner Tractor Parts, several local suppliers and a coat of paint the restoration was complete.

Tractor Story – Ford 861

02/15/2013 by ST 5 Comments

I restored this 861 Ford Powermaster last year and have been too busy
to show it yet. It was the typical red, blue, gray, and rust- old
tractor when I purchased it. Some of the parts used for the restoration
came from your store, purchased by myself and my son as Christmas
presents a year ago. I’ve been restoring antique Ford cars for 50
years, but this was the first tractor. Thank you for your great service
and help directing me to locations that may have those hard to find
parts.

I found this 1961 Massey Ferguson 35 in Orlando and felt sorry for her so I took a chance and bought it with the intentions of a quick paint job and then use it to mow with. Boy was I wrong, I got it home and there was oil and antifreeze coming out of everything, nothing worked and it needed alot. I got started and this is where I am so far. New front tires and wheels, new gauges, battery, front main seal, sand blasted the body and a complete repaint, new decals, new fuel filters, de-sludged the motor, new seat and mounting bracket, new steering wheel and trim, replaced voltage regulator, new fuel sending unit, new manifold and exhaust, new water pump and fan belt, new hood ornament. So far so good,  just lots of money and time.

Tractor Story – John Deere 40U

I got this John Deere model 40U from a friend of mine after he had a massive stroke. My dad and I spent a lot of time working and a lot of trips to Steiners to get different parts. After 850 hours of working on it I got it all painted and running like a champ. Last September my wife and I took it to the Big Bridge crossing and I got my wish to drive it across the Mighty Mack. When I got it it didn’t start or run so we pushed it on the trailer with another tractor and after a week I drove it off. It was a lot of work but was well worth it. I am very grateful for the help of the service personnel at Steiner Tractor Parts to help me find different parts and the wiring harness that was very hard to find. Without you all I would not have been able to do this protect.

“PINK”

The Pink Tractor Story

By: Kristi Short

Sequim, Washington

A few years ago, I was searching for an old, preferably tarnished and weather-worn, tractor to use as the focal point of a rustic landscape project. Weeks of inquiries turned into months of searching. Finally, I heard about a 1947 CASE that might be available.

I was puzzled, however, by the photo provided by the owners. It appeared that the original CASE orange paint had faded to a pale shade of PINK!

When I arrived at the Vashon Island address (Washington State), the gentleman-owner lifted the garage door. There it was. A PINK tractor. No, not the faded orange I had been anticipating. The tractor had been painted pink. Fortunately, this was a happy surprise, because I had always dreamed about someday owning my own tractor and painting it pink. Serendipity?

I think not.

The gentleman and his wife explained that there was one more condition that I must agree to before they would approve the sale. I had to promise that the tractor would always remain pink.  That cancelled the plans to use this tractor in the rustic landscape, but when I heard their story, I knew I had to have this pink tractor for my own.

They shared that when they first moved to Vashon Island, they attended the local Strawberry Festival Parade. When the husband saw the antique tractor entries in the parade, he knew that someday he would be a part of the parade with his own tractor.

Years passed, but he had not given up his dream. He finally found an old CASE tractor that had become so faded that the original CASE orange appeared to be pale pink.  He brought it home and parked it where passers-by could see it all the time. Soon their property became known to the locals as The Pink Tractor Farm.”

As that year’s Strawberry Festival approached, the husband worked feverishly to get the pink tractor running.  He worked throughout the night before the parade. To his wife’s surprise and delight, her husband and grandchildren had applied a fresh coat of pink paint to the tractor . . in her honor. She had bravely battled and overcome breast cancer, so PINK, the tractor, was a tribute to her courage and determination.  Somehow PINK must have known how much his participation in the parade meant to this couple, because at the last moment, PINK mustered up all his strength and sputtered into his spot in the parade of tractors.

A new chapter unfolded in the couple’s lives, and they had to move back to New York. They had to make the emotional decision that PINK would not be able to make the cross country trip with them.

After hearing their touching story, I wanted PINK more than ever.  It was a promise that I was honored to make and to keep.

PINK came to live on my property in Port Angeles, Washington. When I had saved enough money, I approached Jim Bekkevar to ask him if he would help me restore PINK, my 1947 CASE tractor.

I didn’t get an immediate yes from Jim. I shared PINK’s background story with Jim and what it would mean to me personally, as I have a sister who also courageously battled and survived breast cancer.  Jim’s big heart finally melted. He agreed to take on the project and dived into it 100%. He fixed, repaired, replaced and cleaned every part of PINK from front to back. Every week Jim faithfully gave me progress reports.

Before long, word got out that Jim was restoring a tractor . . . . a PINK tractor. Visitors began dropping by his shop to get a look at that “pink” tractor. As with any project that Jim undertakes, his attention to detail is impeccable. He treats every project with pride and respect as though it were his very own. Jim performed his amazing magic on PINK.

I can’t thank Jim Bekkevar enough for his talent and skills in making this dream of mine come true. PINK is alive and running, sporting a fresh coat of pink paint, ready to carry the message of hope and courage to everyone who sees it.

The Flabob Farmall Update

As usual have created more “accessories” that has taken tractor to yet another level. Finished perfecting them a week ago.

Took her on the road last Saturday to city fire dept. annual open house and had no problems with new electrical additions. No more arm waving for turns.  Just flip turn switch and go.  Have to train myself to reset turn switch in timely manner after I complete trurns. Everybody at open house delighted with tractor. Can’t count number of smiles, waves and horn toots tractor received on way to and from open house.

I think I now have a first rate “Guide Tractor”  for airplanes landing at Flabob Airport and for tractor runs I would like to organize from Flabob in the future.

If you get inquiries on your new web site about what I have done to my ’52 H, I will be happy to share detail “how to’s” about the new gear.  I am especially proud of the rear view mirrors I added.  So much easier to drive and feel safer with them in place.  Cheapest and easiest change to make.  Motor cycle mirrors and electrical clamp from Home Depot. For me, $10 change.

My friends love the new “Richthofen” gunsigts on the front.

Iowa State Antique Tractor Club Status Update

01/29/2013 by ST Leave a Comment

I hope everyone at Steiner Tractor Parts had a great holiday season. All of us in the club at Iowa State have started working on the mist green 880 again after our break. There will be an article in the January edition of Wallace Farmer from Farm Progress Publications about the club. It is basically about the beginning of the project and up to before paint. Steiner Tractor Parts is mentioned in there as one of our main sponsors. As you can see in the attached picture the club is growing with a lot of new faces. Some members weren’t even able to be there the other night when the picture was taken. The tractor is completely primed, with the exception of a couple parts we are still tracking down, and so its almost ready for reassembly. Final parts are being gathered up and reassembly will begin next week.
