Hartslog Heritage Museum
Oct 10 @ 08:00 – 17:00

The museum and its annual festival, Hartslog Day, originated in 1975 in preparation for our nation’s 200th anniversary. The …Alexandria Bicentennial Association had a monument made to mark the site of “Hart’s Logg” and compiled and published the book, Hartslog Heritage. Out of these efforts, the museum was incorporated in 1976 to provide a central site where artifacts and information of the Hartslog area could be preserved.

Hartslog Day began in 1975 as a homecoming celebration to promote the sale of Hartslog Heritage and unveil the new monument. In 1976 Hartslog Day celebrated our nation’s bicentennial. 1977 the community observed the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of Alexandria. 1978 marked no special anniversary, so no festival was planned. But because of popular demand the festival returned in 1979 to become an annual celebration of the Hartslog heritage. It is now the primary means of financial support for the museum. The Legend of Hart’s Logg and the Tradition of Hartslog Day–

The name of John Hart, who was licensed as an Indian trader in 1744, has been perpetuated in many ways in this area he frequented.
Near the site of the Hartslog Heritage Museum, John Hart used a large hollowed-out log to feed and salt his horses while he conducted his trading.

Early settlers used this “logg” as a landmark to describe the location of their claims and referred to the area as Hartslog Settlement. In 1793 this area was laid out into town lots and named Alexandria, with the street near the site of the log name Hartslog Street.

Today the name remains for Hartslog Street as well as Hartslog Valley, the Hartslog Grange and more recently, for the Hartslog Heritage Museum and Hartslog Day.
