I was raised on a farm in extreme Southern Illinois and as long as I can remember, there have been Farmall tractors around. H's, M's, a Super M, 350 and a 400 are all tractors I grew up with. The above picture is me sitting on the grill of my Grandpa's Super M when it was practically new. When I was 10 or 11 years old I broke my tailbone driving an old M because I had to sit on the seat support to push in on the clutch.
This old M is a 1951 model that my Dad bought out of Southeat Missouri a few years ago. Nearly three years ago he gave it to me to see if I wanted to fix it up. Two years ago he survived a stroke, so that made me more determined to finish this project.
So, I started to disassemble, clean, pressure-wash, and paint the frame, motor and running gear. The gas tank, hood, grill, and some other sorted parts I had sand-blasted and painted by a friend of mine. After the assembly process reached the point that the tractor was running again, I drove it over to the same friend's garage to pull off the rear rims and tires and paint the rear wheels.
This old tractor runs good and has no noise in the running gear that I can detect. The radiator was cleaned, a new manifold was installed, the 12 volt system charges, all the lights work, and the live pump is plumbed with all new hoses through an original "Christmas Tree" valve to work the three-point hitch.
Thanks to Steiners', many of the finishing touches were possible.
